Ava's heart raced as she faced the desperation in Derek's eyes. The mate who had shattered her nine years ago now stood before her, pleading for attention. She could hardly breathe, her instincts warring within her. Braiden's presence only magnified the tumult, his energy a brooding storm beside her, as if he was gearing up for a confrontation.
Derek pushed through the crowd, his broad shoulders and fierce demeanor parting the sea of wolves that had gathered. "Ava, please, let me explain," he implored, his voice breaking through the stunned silence of the hall.
The tension was palpable. Ava felt the weight of every pair of eyes in the room bearing down on her, including Braiden's, whose unreadable face hid a depth of emotions she couldn't begin to decipher.
"What is there to explain, Derek?" Ava's voice was steady, yet sharp, cutting through his entreaties. "You rejected me. You left me with no explanation, no apology, nothing!"
Derek raised his hands in a gesture of helplessness, his eyes pleading for understanding. "I had no choice, Ava. There were... circumstances. Please, just hear me out."
Braiden took a step forward, his presence an overwhelming force that seemed to take up more space than was physically possible. "Ava is now under my protection," he said, his voice a low growl that sent shivers down Ava's spine. "If you wish to speak, you'll do so with respect."
Derek's eyes flashed with a mixture of anxiety and determination. "Respect? From you, of all people, the Black Wolf King?" He spat the words, earning gasps from the crowd.
"Enough," Ava interjected, her voice steadying the chaotic energy in the room. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. "I'll talk to you, Derek. But not here."
A murmur spread through the assembly. Braiden's eyes narrowed but he stepped back, respecting her decision. Without another word, Ava followed Derek through the sea of wolves and out into the secluded gardens that lay beyond the main hall.
The gardens were a stark contrast to the grandiosity inside, a tranquil haven of moonlight and whispering foliage. As they walked, Ava's mind swam with questions and doubts. What could possibly justify the nine years of pain and abandonment Derek had subjected her to?
They stopped by a small fountain, the gentle sound of water providing a soothing backdrop. Derek ran a hand through his hair, looking more vulnerable than she'd ever seen him.
"Ava, I know you have every right to hate me," he began, his voice tinged with regret. "But there were forces at work that you couldn't—no, shouldn't have understood back then."
"Try me," Ava said coldly, crossing her arms over her chest. "You owe me that much."
Derek took a deep breath, his eyes locking onto hers. "I was threatened, Ava. Someone in the pack... they had information about my family, information that could ruin them. They used that to blackmail me into rejecting you."
Ava's eyes widened, a mixture of disbelief and anger boiling within her. "Who? Who would do that?"
Derek looked pained. "It was Elder Marcus. He didn't approve of our bond. He thought another mate would be more beneficial for the pack's political alliances."
Ava felt a sting of betrayal. Elder Marcus had been a respected figure, a guiding force in the pack. The idea that he could be behind such treachery was almost too much to bear.
"And you just... caved?" she asked, her voice trembling with suppressed rage.
"I had no choice," Derek repeated, his voice cracking. "You have to understand, I did it to protect you. To protect us both."
Ava shook her head, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "You could have told me. You could have trusted me, Derek. But instead, you broke me."
Derek stepped closer, his eyes filled with genuine remorse. "I know, Ava. And I regret it every day. But I've come to make things right. I've exposed Marcus. He's been exiled, and I've come to beg for your forgiveness."
Before Ava could process his confession, the air around them grew tense. The sudden appearance of Braiden, who had followed them undetected, sent ripples of shock through both Ava and Derek.
"Forgiveness?" Braiden's voice was a powerful, resonant growl. His eyes, twin black voids, locked onto Derek. "And what of the pain you've caused her? The years she spent alone?"
Derek stiffened, sensing the imminent danger. "I don't need your judgment, King."
Ava stepped between them, her presence a fragile barrier. "Stop it! Both of you!" She took a deep breath, her voice quivering. "This isn't the time for old wounds. There are larger issues at play."
Braiden's eyes softened slightly as he looked at her. "You're right. But understand this, Ava. If he hurts you again, I will not be so lenient."
Derek nodded, his expression one of resigned acceptance. "I understand."
As the tension began to ease, a new presence made itself known. A tall, striking woman with long, raven-black hair and piercing green eyes entered the garden. She moved with a predatory grace, her eyes assessing the scene before her.
"Lia?" Braiden's voice held a note of surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"Lia is my sister," Derek said, introducing her. "She has been helping me uncover the conspiracy within our pack."
Lia stepped forward, her gaze landing on Ava. "We've been working in secret to expose the corruption. And we believe there are still hidden threats that need to be dealt with."
Ava felt a twinge of unease. The situation was becoming more complicated by the minute. "What kind of threats?"
Lia's expression turned serious. "There are those who see you, Ava, as a danger. The legend of the white wolf... they believe you threaten their power."
Ava's mind spun with the implications. The legend of the white wolf, a direct descendant of the Moon Goddess, was not just myth. It was her reality. And that reality had made her a target.
"We need to find out who they are and what their plans are," Braiden said, his voice filled with resolve. "But we can't do it alone."
Derek nodded. "Agreed. We need to unite our forces, not just for our packs, but for the future of all werewolves."
Ava looked at the three of them, feeling an unexpected sense of unity. For the first time in years, she wasn't alone. She had allies, and together, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the moonlight bathed the garden in a silvery glow, Ava felt a glimmer of hope. She had a purpose, and she would fight for it. For her pack, for her future, and for the love that had been denied to her.
But as they stood there, united in their resolve, a shadowy figure watched from the distance, hidden among the trees. The figure's eyes gleamed with malevolent intent, and a sinister smile curled at the corner of its lips.
The battle was far from over. And the true enemy had yet to reveal itself.
