For the Love of Lies cover

Darkness surrounded Nina as she slowly regained consciousness. Her head felt like it was splitting open, and her throat was parched. She instinctively reached out, her fingers touching cold, concrete ground. Panic spiked through her as she struggled to remember what happened. The last thing she recalled was the dark hand clamping over her mouth.

Her eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering in through a small, barred window high up on a wall. She appeared to be in some kind of basement, cold and unyielding. She tried to stand but immediately felt a sharp pain in her ankle. Wincing, she steadied herself against the wall.

Suddenly, a door creaked open, and heavy footsteps echoed against the concrete floor. A man stepped into the light, his features cloaked in shadow.

“Who are you? What do you want?” Nina demanded, her voice catching on the edge of fear and defiance.

The man stepped closer, revealing his face. She recognized him immediately—**Leonard Vance**, a notorious tech magnate whose company had recently been embroiled in a scandal with DeLuca Tech.

“You stole something from Luc, didn’t you?” Leonard’s voice was a low, dangerous growl.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Nina shot back, hiding her fear behind bravado.

“Oh, I think you do. You have information that belongs to me.”

Before Nina could respond, another figure appeared at the door. **Mara Owens**, Leonard's right hand and known for her ruthlessness, entered with a sinister smile.

“Nina Hughes, the tenacious journalist,” Mara said, her voice dripping with mock admiration. “You’ve gotten yourself into quite the mess.”

Meanwhile, Luc paced his penthouse, his mind a hurricane of worry. The moment Nina’s phone call had been abruptly cut off, he feared the worst. He dialed Riley's number.

“Riley, someone took Nina. I need your help finding her,” Luc’s voice was strained, verging on desperation.

“Already on it. I’m tracing her phone. Don’t worry, we’ll find her,” Riley reassured.

Luc’s thoughts spiraled as he fought to stay calm. The stakes were higher than he’d ever imagined. His feelings for Nina—unexpected and potent—clouded his otherwise rational mind. He couldn’t afford to lose her.

---

Back in the basement, Mara circled Nina like a predator. “Luc gave you a flash drive, didn’t he? Tell us where it is.”

Nina's resolve hardened. “Even if I did, I wouldn’t give it to the likes of you.”

Leonard's patience snapped. “I tried to be civil, but we can do this the hard way.” He pulled out a phone and showed Nina a video feed—Luc’s penthouse surrounded by armed men. “We have eyes everywhere. Help us, or he dies.”

---

Riley's expertise led Luc to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. He moved stealthily, his heart pounding. Losing Nina wasn’t an option. He found a way in, navigating through the labyrinthine corridors until he heard muffled voices.

Nina’s courage wavered but didn’t break. Leonard and Mara leaned in, sensing her hesitation. The door burst open before they could act, and Luc strode in, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Let her go," Luc’s voice echoed through the room. "This is between you and me, Vance."

Leonard smirked, "It became her business the moment she involved herself."

Luc’s eyes flicked to Mara, who aimed a gun at Nina. The room was steeped in tension, an impasse.

Nina saw her opportunity. Using the distraction, she kicked up, hitting Mara’s wrist. The gun skittered across the floor. Chaos ensued as Luc tackled Leonard to the ground. Nina hobbled to the weapon, gripping it with shaking hands.

“Stop!” she shouted, pointing the gun at Mara.

Mara’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t have the guts.”

Luc disengaged from Leonard, both men breathing heavily. “Nina, let’s end this. Give me the gun.”

Leonard lunged for Luc, but he was ready. With a swift motion, Luc disarmed Leonard and left him incapacitated.

Riley’s voice buzzed in Luc's earpiece, “Cops are on their way. Finish this.”

Mara backed away, her hands raised in surrender. “You win this round, DeLuca. But it’s far from over.”

---

They stumbled from the warehouse just as police sirens blared in the distance. Luc supported Nina as they made their way to his car. Once inside, he cradled her gently, his fingers lingering on her bruised cheek.

“Are you okay?” His voice was strained, full of concern.

Nina nodded, tears welling in her eyes. “I will be.”

Luc’s gaze softened. The tension between them crackled as they faced each other in the confined space. His hand found hers, and without saying a word, they shared a moment of undeniable connection.

---

Back at Luc’s penthouse, Riley already had a surveillance network set up to ensure their safety. Nina's heart still raced as she processed the night's events. Luc approached her, holding a medical kit.

“Let me take care of that ankle.”

She watched, the tension from the evening mixing with a deepening attraction she found hard to deny. As Luc gently bandaged her sprain, his touch was both tender and electrifying.

Their eyes met, and the gravity of the moment pulled them closer. Luc’s lips brushed against hers, a question lingering between them.

Nina’s breath hitched as she leaned in, her lips meeting his in a kiss full of urgency and unspoken promises. The world outside faded away, leaving them enveloped in each other’s presence.

But the serenity was fleeting. Just as the kiss deepened, Luc's phone buzzed. Riley's voice came through urgently. “We've got another problem, Luc. They're not done yet.”
