Cesar Hernandez sat at her desk, her mind swirling with thoughts of her recent encounter with Enzo. She had hoped that working late would keep her mind off him, but his words echoed in her head. "We can’t just forget it. We owed each other more than that."
She stood up, stretching her stiff muscles, and decided to get a cup of coffee. As she walked to the kitchenette, she couldn't shake the feeling that her past was catching up to her, inextricably entwining with her present. Just as she poured herself a cup, Enzo walked in, his presence filling the small room.
"Still here?" he asked, his voice soft and questioning.
Cesar turned to face him, unable to hide the mixture of emotions in her eyes. "There’s a lot to catch up on."
Enzo stepped closer, the memories of their past relationship flickering in his gaze. "Cesar, we need to talk about us."
"There is no 'us'," she replied, her voice firm. "There hasn’t been for a long time."
Enzo sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You can keep telling yourself that, but it’s not true. There's still something between us, and you know it."
For a moment, Cesar was transported back in time to when they were inseparable. The love they shared was intense and consuming, but so was the pain when it all fell apart. "Enzo, I can’t do this," she whispered. "Not now. Not ever."
"I understand," Enzo said, his voice tinged with regret. "But we can’t keep avoiding this forever."
