Breaking the Rules of Love cover

The sun dipped low in the sky, casting golden rays that danced on the windows of Crestwood University's historic campus. Olivia Bennett hurried across the quad, her messenger bag bouncing against her hip as she weaved through clusters of students. Her mind buzzed with ideas for her report on the upcoming basketball championship, but beneath her professional zeal lingered a tantalizing excitement she couldn't quite shake off.

Reaching the entrance of the stately Stonebridge Hall, she paused, catching her breath. The building's imposing facade seemed to cast an omnipresent shadow, both an emblem of the university's tradition and a reminder of the boundaries she was poised to challenge. Taking a deep breath, Olivia pushed open the heavy door and slipped inside.

Inside the building, the muffled sound of laughter and discussions echoed through the halls. Students and professors alike were absorbed in their academic rituals, but Olivia's thoughts were elsewhere—as they often were these days. Her path led her to the familiar territory of the journalism department, where she would meet Sarah, her best friend and fellow writer for "The Crestwood Chronicle."

Sarah's voice greeted her as soon as she stepped into the bustling newsroom. "Liv! Over here!" Sarah called from a desk buried in piles of notes and clippings. Her strawberryblonde hair caught the light as she gestured excitedly.

"Hey," Olivia replied, squeezing into the chair beside her. "How's the feature on the new art exhibit coming?"

Sarah shrugged, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. "It's shaping up. But I'm more interested in hearing about your interview with Ethan Carter. Everyone's talking about how intense he is. What's he like?"

Olivia hesitated, images from her meeting with Professor Carter flashing vividly in her mind. His poise. The way his eyes darkened when discussing strategy. And, of course, the undeniable chemistry that simmered beneath their polite conversation.

"He's... different," Olivia finally said, choosing her words carefully. "Passionate about the team, definitely. But there's something more to him. Something I can't quite put my finger on."

Sarah caught her gaze, eyebrows raised in curiosity. "Well, if anyone can get the full story, it's you, Liv. Just be careful. A professor's reputation can make or break a student at Crestwood."

Nodding absently, Olivia glanced at her watch and felt the flicker of adrenaline. "The practice session should be starting soon. I'm scheduled to cover it for the Chronicle."

She gathered her things, feeling Sarah's wellmeaning eyes on her, and headed out of the newsroom with a mix of determination and trepidation. The walk to the gymnasium was a blur, her mind whirring with questions and possibilities.

As she approached the gym, the distant thud of basketballs bouncing on the polished wood floors resonated through the building. The rhythmic sound grew louder, setting the pace of her racing heart. Olivia paused, then pushed open the door and slipped inside, unnoticed in the rear of the gymnasium.

The team was already engrossed in a spirited scrimmage. Players weaved, dodged, and shot with precision born of countless hours of practice. Professor Carter stood at the court's edge, his gaze sharp and focused. His presence was commanding yet almost solitary, as though he were present in mind as well as body.

Olivia's pen danced over her notepad, capturing the highlights of the session. Despite her intent to remain inconspicuous, her eyes kept straying back to Ethan. He was a study in contrasts—effortless yet intense, every movement leading with unspoken authority.

Suddenly, the whistle blew, drawing the game to a halt. Ethan consulted briefly with the head coach, then began circulating among the players, offering feedback. Olivia's heart skipped a beat when his gaze landed on her, a flicker of recognition lighting his eyes.

He made his way over, his approach sending a flurry of anticipation through her. "Miss Bennett," he greeted, his voice low and cordial. "Covering the practice for the Chronicle?"

Olivia nodded, selfconscious under his steady regard. "Yes, I wanted to get an early start on the championship coverage."

Ethan's lips curved into a knowing smile. "It's always impressive—the effort you put into your work."

Heat rose to Olivia's cheeks, but she met his eyes squarely, refusing to be easily flustered. "Thank you, Professor Carter."

His expression shifted slightly, as if he wished to say more, but instead, her phone buzzed, interrupting the current. Glancing at the screen, Olivia saw a text from Sarah.

Urgent: We need to talk. Meet me at the office ASAP.

"I have to go," Olivia said, balancing disappointment with professional resolve. "But I'll see you at the next practice."

Ethan inclined his head, and for a moment, everything else faded away—the players, the echoing gymnasium, the impending deadlines. There was only him, standing just an arm's reach away, a world of mystery behind those expressive eyes.

"Until then," he replied, his voice a gentle promise.

As Olivia walked away, her steps brisk but her heart burdened, she couldn't shake the feeling that the universe was setting the stage for something momentous—and perilous. Little did she know, the urgency in Sarah's message hinted at more than just a scoop. As she stepped into the brisk evening, the shadows around Crestwood deepened, as if warning her of secrets waiting to unravel.

Tomorrow, everything could change.
